Are you burnt out?

Have you ever felt completely exhausted and overwhelmed by work, to the point where it feels like you can’t keep going? 

Like your brain is about to have a nuclear melt down?

As though you no longer recognize yourself?

If so, you may be in the midst of a burnout.

As a burnout researcher and coach, I have personally experienced burnout, and now work with people who have also gone through a burnout. Here are some of the ways people define burnout in their own words:

  • A lack of energy, engagement, motivation

  • Unable to emotionally and physically do my job and life

  • Getting tired of everything, to the point of slowly losing myself

  • Being so exhausted that everything triggers you and very few things motivate you

  • Feeling like you cannot go on at the job that you have. A great impact to emotional, mental and physical health.

  • Burnout is a new set of limitations that my body is putting on me that I can’t ignore. My body is shutting down mentally and physically, and preventing  me from keeping up with life’s demands. Mental and physical fatigue. It’s exhaustion. 

What is burnout?

Burnout is a physiological breakdown that manifests in emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a decrease in your productivity, and results from unmanaged, chronic workplace stress. Burnout has also become alarmingly common, with some studies showing that as many as 77% of workers have experienced it at some point in their careers.

The trouble is, it can also be difficult to tell when you’re burnt out vs just being tired, and if you are burnt out, how bad it is.

How do I know whether I’m burnt out?
